# How does a ship recycling plot in Alang work out its emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/alang-ship-recycling-yard-cutting-gas-co2

Most direct emissions come from LPG burnt in cutting torches and diesel in winches, cranes and vehicles. Add electricity from the bill. Divide by tonnes of steel recovered, or by light displacement tonnes of the ship. Oxygen used with the torches is bought in, so its emissions sit in Scope 3.

## Inputs

- LPG cylinders or bulk LPG for cutting.
- Diesel for winches, cranes and trucks.
- Grid electricity and DG diesel.

## Who asks

Re-rollers and steel buyers increasingly want a figure for the plate they buy. Keep tonnes recovered per ship.

## Worked example

- LPG: 18 t for one ship x 2.98 kg = 53.6 t CO2
- Diesel: 25,000 L x 2.68 kg = 67.0 t CO2
- Steel recovered: 9,000 t, so about 13 kg CO2 per tonne

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
