# Are graphite electrodes covered by CBAM?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/are-graphite-electrodes-covered-by-cbam

No. Graphite electrodes are declared under 8545, which is not in Annex I. But the electrode carbon a steelmaker consumes in an arc furnace counts in that steel's direct emissions, so EU and Asian mills may ask how much carbon your electrodes hold.

## Why buyers still ask

An arc furnace mill reports electrode consumption in its mass balance. A figure for carbon content per tonne of electrode helps it, and a product footprint helps its Scope 3.

## Could coverage change

The Commission proposed in December 2025 to extend CBAM to some downstream steel and aluminium products. As of October 2026 that is not law, so check Annex I again before each contract season.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity invoices into dated, fingerprinted records, so if a buyer asks for a product footprint you can answer from documents rather than estimates.
