# How does an Asansol refractory plant work out its CO2 per tonne of bricks?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/asansol-refractory-plant-kiln-co2-per-tonne

Add kiln and dryer fuel to any CO2 released by calcining carbonate raw materials on site, then divide by tonnes fired. Refractories are not CBAM goods, so this is for buyers' footprints and your own targets.

## Fuel

- Gas, oil or coal for tunnel and shuttle kilns.
- Fuel for dryers and any calcining kilns.
- Electricity separately, as Scope 2.

## Process CO2

If you calcine magnesite or dolomite yourself, the carbonate breaks down and releases CO2: about 0.522 tonnes per tonne of MgCO3 and 0.477 per tonne of dolomite, using IPCC defaults. If you buy dead-burnt material, that CO2 sits with your supplier.

## Per tonne

Divide by tonnes fired in the same month. Shapes and grades differ in firing temperature, so steel plant buyers may ask for figures by product family.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted plant records, so the monthly intensity behind a figure can be traced to its source.
