# What is the carbon footprint of a bandhani tie-dye piece?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/bandhani-tie-dye-carbon-footprint

The tying is handwork with almost no energy. Emissions come from the fabric, each dyebath heated with fuel or steam, washing, drying and transport. Many colours mean many dyebaths, so count heating energy per bath. Divide by pieces dyed in that bath.

## What to count

- Fabric, from supplier or database.
- Fuel or firewood to heat each dyebath.
- Dyes and chemicals.
- Drying and washing.

## Firewood

CO2 from firewood is biogenic and reported separately; methane and nitrous oxide still count.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
