# How does a sponge iron plant in Barbil count power from its waste heat boiler?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/barbil-sponge-iron-plant-waste-heat-power

Power from a waste heat recovery boiler on the kiln adds no new fuel, because the coal is already counted in the kiln. Do not add a grid factor for it. Count the kiln coal once, by mass balance, and treat waste heat power as your own zero-fuel supply that cuts grid purchases.

## What to count

- Coal fed to the kiln, with carbon content from lab tests.
- Carbon left in sponge iron, char and dust.
- Grid power bought on top, at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh.

## Waste heat power

Record generation from the turbine meter. It lowers Scope 2 by replacing grid units, but it is not a separate emission or a credit to subtract from Scope 1.

## For CBAM

Direct reduced iron is a precursor for steel. Your steel buyer needs the kiln figure per tonne of sponge iron; electricity is not charged for iron and steel.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, power and production records into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for.
