# How much CO2 does grinding barite for drilling mud emit per tonne?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/barite-grinding-drilling-grade-co2-per-tonne

Grinding to drilling grade fineness is most of it: mill electricity times 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, divided by tonnes. Add mining diesel and freight to the buyer. Barite is not a CBAM good, but oilfield buyers increasingly ask for a figure.

## Records

- Mill electricity by month.
- Mining and haulage diesel.
- Tonnes dispatched at the specified density grade.

## Buyers

Oilfield service companies count your figure in their Scope 3 Category 1. Give it per tonne with the grade named.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
