# How does a mill at Bekabad work out the CBAM figure for electric arc furnace steel?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/bekabad-steel-eaf-rebar-cbam-figure

Count the carbon from electrodes, charge carbon and any gas burnt in the furnace and reheating, plus bought precursors such as pig iron or DRI. Scrap itself carries no embedded emissions. Electricity is reported separately and is not charged for steel, though buyers will still ask for it.

## Direct emissions

- Graphite electrodes consumed, by mass.
- Charge carbon and injection carbon.
- Natural gas for ladles and the reheating furnace.
- Lime and dolomite only if calcined on site.

## Precursors

Bought pig iron, DRI or billets each bring their own embedded emissions. Ask those suppliers for figures or use default values.

## Electricity

Report the furnace's kWh per tonne and the grid factor used. With a gas heavy grid the indirect figure is large, even though it is not charged.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps each site's fuel, power and production records together, so the embedded emissions you send an EU importer trace back to dated documents.
