# How do bell metal utensil workshops estimate the carbon footprint per kg?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/bell-metal-utensil-carbon-footprint

Count the charcoal, coal or gas used to melt and anneal, plus the copper and tin bought, per kilogram of finished utensils. Copper and tin usually outweigh the furnace. Recycled scrap metal lowers the material share, so record what portion you remelt.

## Per kg

- Copper and tin bought, or scrap remelted.
- Furnace fuel: charcoal, coal or LPG.
- Electricity for polishing and lathes.

## Charcoal

Charcoal CO2 is biogenic if from sustainable wood, but making charcoal releases methane, so ask the source.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible turns your fuel, power and material invoices into a dated, sourced activity record, the starting point for a per-unit footprint.
