# How do I count latex and backing cloth in a tufted carpet footprint?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/bhadohi-tufted-carpet-latex-backing-scope-3

Latex compound and backing cloth are purchased materials, so they go in Scope 3 Category 1 for your company and in the cradle to gate figure per square metre. Multiply kg used per square metre by a supplier or published factor for each material, and add the energy of the curing oven.

## Materials

- Latex: synthetic SBR or natural rubber, with different factors.
- Primary and secondary backing: cotton, jute or polypropylene.
- Filler such as chalk in the compound.

## Curing

Gas, diesel or wood burned in the drying and curing stage, per square metre, from fuel invoices and production logs.

## Where to find factors

Ask the latex and cloth suppliers first; use a published average only when they cannot answer, and label it.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads purchase invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record, so each supplier figure in your Scope 3 sits next to the quantity and the document it applies to.
