# What is the carbon footprint of making bidis?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/bidi-making-carbon-footprint-per-thousand

Hand rolling uses no energy. The footprint is in the tobacco and tendu leaves, roasting the rolled bidis, often over coal, wood or LPG, and packaging. Count roasting fuel at IPCC defaults and divide by thousands of bidis.

## Sources

- Scope 1: roasting fuel at the factory.
- Scope 3: tobacco, tendu leaves, thread, labels and packets.
- Home rollers: their work is unpowered; transport to and from them is Scope 3.

## Wood fuel

Wood gives biogenic CO2, reported separately, but its methane and nitrous oxide count.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
