# How much CO2 did biomass co-firing in Indian thermal plants save in FY 2025-26?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/biomass-cofiring-thermal-power-india-co2-saved

About 3.7 million tonnes of CO2, as assessed by the National Biomass Mission and reported in CEA's database version 22.0. Seventy-five thermal plants with 100,071 MW of capacity co-fired about 3.07 million tonnes of biomass in FY 2025-26, up from about 1.62 million tonnes the year before.

## FY 2025-26 figures

- Plants that started co-firing: 75, with 100,071 MW of capacity
- Biomass used: 3,071,938 tonnes
- Cumulative biomass used to 31 March 2026: 5,183,757 tonnes
- CO2 saved in the year: 3,686,326 tonnes

## Why it matters to suppliers

Thermal plants buying pellets need consistent delivery records: tonnes, moisture, calorific value and source of residue. A supplier who can show those per lot is easier to contract and easier to audit.

## Effect on the grid factor

Co-firing replaces some coal, so it lowers plant emissions slightly. At about 3.7 million tonnes against roughly 1,189 million tonnes from the sector, it is a small part of the fall in the FY 2025-26 grid factor.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads purchase and sales invoices into dated records per site, so tonnes delivered, fuel type and dates are on file for each lot.
