# What should a box maker ask its kraft paper mill for?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/box-maker-kraft-paper-supplier-carbon-data

Ask for CO2e per tonne of kraft paper for a stated year, what it includes, and how biomass fuel was treated. Kraft paper is usually the biggest line in a corrugated box's footprint, so the mill's figure decides most of yours.

## The questions

- CO2e per tonne, by grade, for a named calendar or financial year.
- Boundary: mill gate only, or including waste paper and chemicals.
- Fuel mix and how biogenic CO2 was reported.
- Electricity source, grid or captive, and the factor used.

## If the mill has no figure

Ask for fuel, power and output for the year and work it out with them. Mark it as supplier data you calculated, not a published figure.

## Use it

Multiply by tonnes of paper per box, including trim waste, and add your own corrugator and conversion energy.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the energy invoices behind the making stage into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, and keeps material invoices on the Scope 3 trail. Material factors come from your supplier or a named database and are labelled with their source, so the product figure can be traced line by line.
