# What does imported pig iron add to a Brescia mill's CBAM costs?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/brescia-mill-buys-imported-pig-iron-cbam

Pig iron is a CBAM good, so whoever imports it buys certificates for its embedded emissions. Blast furnace pig iron carries much higher emissions per tonne than scrap, so even a small share in the charge mix moves the cost. Charcoal pig iron can be far lower if the biomass qualifies.

## What to ask the supplier

- Embedded emissions per tonne, by installation and period.
- The reductant: coke or charcoal, with biomass evidence if charcoal.
- Verification status.

## Inside the mill

Once imported and paid for, the pig iron enters the mill's EU ETS installation, not its CBAM figure, since the mill itself is in the EU.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps supplier invoices and the emissions data that comes with them in one dated, fingerprinted record per shipment, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034. Senseible does not verify emissions, register declarants or file CBAM declarations.
