# How much CO2 does producing bromine from salt pan bittern emit?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/bromine-from-bittern-co2-per-tonne

Bromine is stripped from bittern, the liquor left after salt crystallises, using chlorine and steam. Steam from the boiler is usually the largest part, with pumping electricity next. Chlorine bought in is Scope 3, carrying the chlor alkali plant's electricity.

## Records

- Boiler fuel for stripping steam.
- Electricity for brine pumps and blowers.
- Chlorine and sulphur dioxide purchases.
- Tonnes of bromine produced.

## Weak bittern

Lower bromide content means more steam per tonne. Report the bittern concentration with the figure.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
