# How should a company answer the BRSR question on sustainable sourcing and the share of inputs sourced sustainably?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/brsr-sustainable-sourcing-percentage-question

Principle 2 asks two things: whether you have procedures for sustainable sourcing, and if yes, what percentage of inputs were sourced sustainably. Define what counts in writing first, then compute the share by value or volume from purchase records, and say which basis you used.

## The question in the BRSR format

Principle 2, essential indicator 2: (a) Does the entity have procedures in place for sustainable sourcing? (b) If yes, what percentage of inputs were sourced sustainably?

## How to build the answer

1. Write the criteria: for example, certified material, recycled content, suppliers that report energy and emissions, or local sourcing.
2. Tag purchase lines that meet the criteria, with evidence for each supplier.
3. Compute the share by purchase value, or by volume for a single material, and state which.
4. Keep the list of qualifying suppliers for the assessor.

## What this means for suppliers

If your customer counts suppliers who report their emissions as sustainable sourcing, your Scope 1 and 2 figures move you into the qualifying share. That is a practical reason to have them ready.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible turns a supplier's electricity bills and fuel invoices into Scope 1 and 2 figures for the financial year, with each bill linked to its line, so a customer's questionnaire can be answered from records. Figures are self-declared.
