# A buyer wants the carbon footprint of a product we have not made yet. What can we give?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/buyer-asks-footprint-of-new-product

Give an estimate, clearly labelled, built from the bill of materials, expected process energy and material factors from similar products you already make. State the assumptions and promise an actual figure after the first production runs. Do not present it as measured.

## Build the estimate

- Materials: weight of each input times a factor, supplier-specific where known.
- Process: expected kWh and fuel per unit from similar products.
- Packaging and transport if the buyer asks.

## Label it

Mark it as an estimate with the date and assumptions, and the products used as a reference.

## Replace it

Recalculate from real meters and production after the first runs and send the update.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
