# Does CEA's grid emission factor include captive power plants?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/captive-power-in-cea-grid-emission-factor

Partly. Since FY 2022-23 CEA includes electricity that grid-connected captive plants inject into the grid: 18,882 GWh in FY 2025-26. Captive power a factory generates and uses itself is not in the grid factor, so count that from your own fuel records, not at 0.675.

## What CEA counts

- Captive power injected into the grid: 17,342 GWh in FY 2022-23, 16,400 in FY 2023-24, 18,695 in FY 2024-25 and 18,882 in FY 2025-26.
- Emissions attributed to that injection: about 17.5 million tonnes CO2 in FY 2025-26.
- Version 22.0 replaced provisional captive data for FY 2024-25 with actual data.

## How to split your own electricity

1. Grid units from the DISCOM bill: apply the CEA weighted average for that year.
2. Captive units generated and used on site: calculate from the fuel burned, as Scope 1.
3. Units bought from another company's captive plant: use that plant's figure if you have it, or the grid factor if you do not, and say which.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads DISCOM bills and fuel invoices into separate dated records, so grid units and captive generation are counted once, in the right scope.
