# How does a car workshop split generator and grid electricity in its footprint?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/car-workshop-genset-and-grid-electricity-split

Count them separately. Grid kWh go to Scope 2 at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. Diesel for the generator goes to Scope 1 at 2.68 kg CO2 per litre. Do not also convert the generator's kWh, or you count the same power twice.

## Steps

Grid kWh from the bill, x 0.710.

Generator litres from fuel invoices, x 2.68.

Report the two lines in their own scopes.

## Why litres, not kWh

The generator's emissions come from the diesel burned. Its kWh output is useful for cost, not for carbon.

## Worked example: one month (illustrative quantities)

- Grid: 4,000 kWh x 0.710 = 2,840 kg CO2 (Scope 2)
- Generator: 300 L x 2.68 = 804 kg CO2 (Scope 1)
- Total: 3,644 kg CO2

Quantities are illustrative.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
