# What carbon KPI should we give plant managers?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/carbon-kpi-for-plant-managers

Use energy or emissions per unit of output, measured monthly, plus a data completeness target. Per unit avoids rewarding a manager for a slow month. Pair it with a few action targets, such as leaks fixed or idle hours cut, that the manager controls directly.

## Good KPIs

- kWh per unit and fuel per unit, monthly.
- Share of fuel and electricity backed by invoices and bills.
- Actions completed on time.

## KPIs to avoid

- Absolute tonnes alone, which fall when orders fall.
- Targets the manager cannot influence, such as the grid factor.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site, and labels estimates as estimates.
