# Can I estimate emissions from the rupee amount of my electricity bill?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/carbon-per-rupee-of-electricity-bill

Only as a rough check. Divide 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh by your all-in cost per kWh: at about ₹8 per kWh that is roughly 0.09 kg per rupee. Fixed charges, demand charges and taxes distort it, so for reporting always use the kWh printed on the bill.

## When the shortcut helps

- A quick check that a calculated figure is in the right range.
- A first estimate before bills are collected, labelled as an estimate.

## When it misleads

- Bills with high demand or fixed charges.
- Months with arrears, rebates or tariff changes.
- Sites with rooftop solar netting off imports.

## Illustrative rough check

- Bill: ₹80,000 for the month; all-in cost about ₹8 per kWh.
- Implied use: 80,000 / 8 = 10,000 kWh.
- Emissions: 10,000 × 0.710 = 7,100 kg CO2.
- Replace with the kWh on the bill when you have it.

Illustrative figures, not a real bill.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site, and labels estimates as estimates.
