# What is the CBAM default value for stainless steel from India?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/cbam-default-value-india-stainless-steel

Between 6.480 and 6.530 t CO2e per tonne for Indian stainless steel, depending on the product. Flat-rolled stainless under CN 7219 and 7220 is 6.490 or 6.500, bars and wire 6.480, and ingots 6.530. Direct emissions only, plus the 10% mark-up in 2026.

## India default values, t CO2e per tonne

- CN 7218 10 00 stainless ingots: 6.530
- CN 7218 91 semi-finished, rectangular: 6.490
- CN 7219 flat-rolled, 600 mm and wider: 6.490 hot-rolled, 6.500 cold-rolled
- CN 7220 flat-rolled, under 600 mm: 6.490 to 6.500
- CN 7221 and 7222 bars and rods: 6.480, cold-formed 6.530
- CN 7223 stainless wire: 6.480

## Mark-up on top

The listed values are increased by a mark-up: 10% for 2026, 20% for 2027 and 30% from 2028. Goods imported in 2026 always take the 2026 mark-up.

## Ferro-alloys drive the number

Stainless needs ferro-chrome and ferro-nickel, and those carry their own embedded emissions as precursors. If your alloy suppliers can give you their figures, your actual value can fall well below the default.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coal, coke, gas, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so an actual figure you send an EU buyer can be traced back to the documents behind it. It does not file CBAM declarations.
