# How do I fill CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) question 7.15.1 when most of my Scope 1 is carbon dioxide but I also top up refrigerant?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/cdp-7-15-1-greenhouse-gas-types-and-gwp-set

Add one row per gas, carbon dioxide (CO2) included, each in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), and name the global warming potential (GWP) set you used. The rows must add to your Scope 1 total in 7.6. CDP recommends the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) values, from its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).

## When it appears and what it asks

Question 7.15.1 appears only if you answered Yes to 7.15. For each gas you add a row with Scope 1 emissions in tonnes CO2e and a GWP reference. CDP asks you to add a row for CO2 as well.

## The gases CDP lists

Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3). CDP notes that the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol amended its standards in May 2013 so that NF3 should be included.

## Choosing the GWP reference

- The drop-down offers IPCC Assessment Reports from the Second to the Sixth, each over 100 years or 20 years, or Other.
- CDP recommends the latest values, from AR6.
- It quotes the GHG Protocol: a company "shall use 100-year GWP values from the IPCC and should use GWP values from the most recent Assessment Report, but may choose to use other IPCC Assessment Reports."
- If a calculation tool applied the GWPs and you do not know which, check the tool documentation.

## Two checks before you submit

- The total of the column must equal gross Scope 1 in 7.6.
- With AR6 values, calculate fossil methane and non-fossil methane separately with their own GWPs, then add them in the methane row.

## Example: three rows that match 7.6

- CO2 from fuel: 98.0 tonnes CO2e.
- Methane: 1.2 tonnes CO2e.
- Refrigerant gas (an example gas with a GWP of 2,000): 5 kilograms (kg) leaked x 2,000 = 10,000 kg = 10.0 tonnes CO2e.
- Total: 98.0 + 1.2 + 10.0 = 109.2 tonnes CO2e, which is the figure that belongs in 7.6.

The gas, its GWP and the quantities are example numbers. Take real GWPs from the IPCC report you name.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, so the litres, kilowatt hours and months are in one place to copy from. Refrigerant leaks and process gases need your own service and process records, which are not fuel invoices or electricity bills.
