# When a Gujarat chemical unit sends hazardous waste to a common incinerator, how is that counted?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/chemical-unit-common-incinerator-waste-scope-3

It is Scope 3, Category 5, waste generated in operations, not your Scope 1. Multiply the tonnes on each manifest by a factor for incinerated waste, ideally from the facility's own fuel and waste records. If none is given, use a stated estimate and mark it as one.

## Why not Scope 1

The incinerator is owned and run by someone else. Your Scope 1 covers only fuel and process emissions in equipment you control.

## What to ask the facility

- Support fuel used per tonne of waste.
- The share of fossil carbon in the waste it receives.
- Whether it recovers energy, and how it reports that.

## Records

Keep the manifests and the facility's invoices by month. They give tonnes, waste category and date, which is what an auditor checks.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, steam, electricity and raw material invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per unit, so a product figure can be traced back to the documents behind it.
