# How do I calculate a cigarette factory's carbon footprint per thousand sticks?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/cigarette-factory-carbon-footprint-per-thousand

Divide factory electricity and boiler fuel by thousands of sticks made. Purchased tobacco, filters, paper and board are Scope 3 and usually larger than the factory. Smoke from the product in use is Scope 3 Category 11 for the maker.

## Records

- Electricity for making and packing machines and humidity control.
- Boiler fuel for tobacco conditioning.
- Purchases of leaf, filters, paper and packaging.

## Use phase

Combustion of the product by smokers releases CO2 and other gases; report it in Category 11 with the method stated.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
