# How are emissions counted at a coal tar pitch distillation plant?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/coal-tar-pitch-distillation-emissions

Coal tar from coke ovens is heated in a fired still and split into pitch, oils and naphthalene. The furnace fuel is Scope 1. The tar arrives as a by-product, so ask the coke maker how it allocates emissions to it. Anode and graphite electrode makers buy the pitch.

## At the distillery

- Fuel for the tar still furnace.
- Electricity for pumps and pitch handling.
- Fume incineration, if fitted.

## The tar itself

Coke oven emissions belong to the coke maker. A share reaches the tar only if the coke maker allocates some to it. Record which approach your supplier used.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
