# Only a quarter of staff answered our commuting survey. Can we still estimate Category 7?

Yes. Use the answers you have to find average distance and mode by site or role, then scale up to total headcount and working days. State the response rate and assumptions. Improve it next year with a two-question form at attendance or payroll time.

## Scaling up

1. Group responses by site and by mode.
2. Find average km per day per mode.
3. Apply the mode split to all staff.
4. Multiply by working days and mode factors.

## Watch for bias

People who drive long distances may answer more often, or less. If the sample looks skewed, say so and test a range.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads supplier invoices into dated records with the quantity, unit and factor on each line, and marks lines without a usable quantity as needing data instead of guessing.
