# How does a copper mine work out emissions from its haul trucks?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/copper-mine-haul-truck-diesel-scope-1

Litres of diesel issued to the haul fleet times about 2.68 kg CO2 per litre, as Scope 1 if the mine owns or controls the trucks. If a contractor runs them, it is Scope 3 for the mine. Track litres per tonne moved, because deeper pits and lower grades push it up year after year.

## Owner or contractor

Control decides the scope. Owned or leased trucks you operate are Scope 1; a mining contractor's fleet is Scope 3 for you and Scope 1 for them.

## The useful ratio

Litres per tonne of material moved, and per tonne of copper in concentrate. Falling ore grades mean more rock moved per tonne of copper.

## Records

Fuel issue logs by truck, contractor fuel reports and tonnes moved.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so a copper product figure can be traced back to the documents behind it. Factors outside India are entered from the official source and labelled.
