# How much CO2 does a coal fired cement kiln in Dar es Salaam emit per tonne of clinker?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/dar-es-salaam-cement-plant-coal-kiln-co2

Calcination releases about 0.52 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of clinker on the IPCC default, and coal burned in the kiln adds more, depending on kiln efficiency. Calculate fuel CO2 from coal invoices and its lab tested carbon or heating value, and add kiln dust if it leaves the system.

## Two sources

- Process: about 0.52 t CO2 per t clinker, or your own CaO and MgO data.
- Fuel: coal tonnes times its emission factor.

## Coal quality

Local and imported coals differ. Lab tests per delivery give a better factor than a default.

## Electricity

Grinding and fans add Scope 2 at the Tanzania grid factor.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure you send a buyer traces back to the documents behind it.
