# Do Indian rules require factories to replace diesel generator backup with solar and batteries?

Not as a hard ban. The Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2022 say consumers using diesel generator sets as essential backup shall endeavour to shift to cleaner options such as renewable energy with battery storage within five years, or on the timeline their state commission sets based on supply reliability in that city.

## What the 2022 amendment says

- In metros and cities with a population of 100,000 or more, the discom must ensure 24x7 uninterrupted supply so diesel generators are not needed, and the state commission sets reliability targets for those cities.
- Consumers using diesel generator sets as essential backup shall endeavour to shift to cleaner technology, such as renewable energy with battery storage, within five years of the amendment or on the state commission's timeline.
- Temporary connections, for construction and similar use, must be given within 48 hours, or seven days if the network needs augmenting, so diesel sets are not used for temporary work.

## How strong is it

The wording is endeavour, and the timeline can be set by the state commission according to how reliable supply is in your city. Air pollution rules for diesel generators sit separately with pollution control boards. Check your state commission's orders for any dated requirement.

## Why it is worth acting on anyway

Diesel burnt in a generator is your Scope 1. Measuring generator hours and diesel litres for a few months tells you how much backup you really need before you size a battery, and what the switch would remove from Scope 1.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads diesel purchase bills and generator log entries, so you can see your generator's litres, hours and Scope 1 emissions month by month before you plan a battery.
