# We buy hot rolled coil from a Dolvi steel works. What figure should we use for Scope 3?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/dolvi-steel-coil-buyer-scope-3-figure

Ask the mill for a product-specific figure per tonne of coil, with its method and boundary, and use it times tonnes bought. Without one, use a published average for the route, labelled. Integrated plants can run more than one ironmaking route, so a figure for the exact product beats a company average.

## What to ask the mill

- CO2e per tonne for the grade and product you buy.
- Whether it is cradle to gate and includes electricity.
- The year and any verification.

## CBAM versus footprint

A CBAM figure for coil counts direct emissions and precursors only. A Scope 3 or product footprint figure includes electricity, so it is usually higher. Do not mix them.

## If no figure comes

Use a sector average such as worldsteel's for the likely route and say so. Replace it when the mill responds.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel, electricity and purchase documents into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its source.
