# A Katanga copper mine runs on hydro power and diesel: how does it count each?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/drc-copper-mine-diesel-vs-hydro-power

Grid power in the DRC is almost all hydro, so its Scope 2 is low. Diesel for gensets, haul trucks and processing is Scope 1 at about 2.68 kg CO2 per litre. When the grid falls short and gensets run, diesel quickly becomes the largest number.

## Records

- Utility bills or meter readings for grid power.
- Diesel invoices split by gensets and mobile fleet.
- Tonnes of copper and cobalt produced.

## Imported power

Power bought across the border from Zambia or elsewhere follows that grid's factor. Keep the contract and invoices.

## For buyers

Cable makers and battery buyers want per tonne figures. Show diesel and power separately so they see what drives the number.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure you send a buyer traces back to the documents behind it.
