# How should a Durban chemical plant calculate its Scope 1 and 2 emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/durban-chemical-plant-scope-1-and-2

Scope 1 covers fuel in boilers and heaters, process emissions from reactions and any flaring or venting. Scope 2 is Eskom electricity at the grid factor for the year. South Africa also requires large emitters to report to the national authority, so align the inventory with those returns.

## Scope 1

- Coal, gas or oil from invoices.
- Process CO2 from reactions, by mass balance.
- Flares and vents, from logs.
- Refrigerant top ups.

## Scope 2

Eskom kWh times the grid factor for the year, with source and year. Steam bought from a neighbour counts here too.

## National reporting

Installations above the national thresholds report to the government each year. Check which activities apply to you under the current regulations.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure you send a buyer traces back to the documents behind it.
