# EcoVadis now asks for Scope 2 location-based and market-based. What changed?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/ecovadis-scope-2-market-location-2026

From 7 May 2026, EcoVadis replaced its single Scope 2 field with two: total location-based and total market-based Scope 2. The scoring weight did not change, but strengths, improvement areas and data reliability now follow the evidence behind each figure, so report both, with documents.

## What changed in the questionnaire

- Removed: Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions (market- or location-based).
- Added: Total gross location-based Scope 2 GHG emissions.
- Added: Total gross market-based Scope 2 GHG emissions.
- Applies to the Sustainability Rating and the Carbon Action Manager, for small, medium, large and extra-large companies.
- EcoVadis says the scoring impact is unchanged, but each figure now gets its own reliability level: Low, Medium, High or Third-Party Verified.

## Working out each figure in India

- Location-based: all grid kWh you consumed x the CEA grid factor for that financial year, 0.675 kg CO2 per kWh for FY 2025-26.
- Market-based: kWh covered by contracts or certificates you can prove, such as retired renewable energy certificates, a green tariff or a renewable open access supply, at their own factor. The rest at a residual mix factor if one is available; otherwise the grid factor, stated as such.
- Rooftop solar you generate and use yourself is not bought electricity. It lowers grid kWh in both figures, and is not a certificate to count again.
- No green contracts at all: both figures come out the same. Report both anyway and say why they match.

## Evidence to attach for each

1. Location-based: the year's electricity bills for every connection, and the factor with its source.
2. Market-based: certificate retirement statements, green tariff bills or open access invoices for the exact kWh you claim, matching the reporting year.
3. A short note of the method: which kWh were covered by what, and which factor the rest used.

## A Coimbatore foundry with part green power

- Grid electricity FY 2025-26: 12,00,000 kWh.
- Location-based: 12,00,000 x 0.675 = 8,10,000 kg = 810 t CO2.
- Certificates retired for 4,00,000 kWh, counted at zero.
- Remaining 8,00,000 kWh at the grid factor, stated as such: 8,00,000 x 0.675 = 5,40,000 kg = 540 t CO2.
- Enter 810 t as location-based and 540 t as market-based, with bills and retirement statements attached.

Quantities are invented. Check your buyer accepts the certificate type before counting it.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reports location-based Scope 2 from your electricity bills and market-based Scope 2 when you add your certificate or green tariff records, so both EcoVadis fields come from the same documents.
