# What is the carbon footprint of an electric iron?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/electric-iron-carbon-footprint-per-unit

Making it is small next to using it: years of heating at a typical 750 to 2,000 watts use far more electricity than making the soleplate, heater and plastic body. Report assembly in Scope 1 and 2, parts in Category 1, and customers' electricity in Category 11.

## Use phase

Estimate rated power × hours of use a week × weeks × years of life × a stated grid factor. State each assumption.

## Manufacturing

- Soleplate, often aluminium.
- Heating element and thermostat.
- Plastic body and cord.
- Assembly and testing electricity.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your electricity bills, fuel invoices and purchase invoices into dated, fingerprinted records, so a per unit footprint can be traced back to the documents behind it. Estimates are labelled as estimates.
