# How much does ultrapure water add to an electronics plant's energy and emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/electronics-plant-ultrapure-water-energy

It adds electricity for pumps, reverse osmosis, electrodeionisation, UV and recirculation, which run all day. Sub meter the water plant if you can; otherwise estimate from motor ratings and hours and label it. It is usually a few percent of a fab's power but grows with recirculation loops.

## Where the energy goes

- High pressure pumps for reverse osmosis.
- Electrodeionisation and UV units.
- Continuous recirculation to keep water pure.
- Wastewater treatment and reclaim.

## How to measure

Sub meters on the water plant feeders give kWh directly. Multiply by the grid factor, and divide by cubic metres produced for a per unit figure.

## Where to save

Variable speed pumps, higher water reclaim and right sized loops cut both water and kWh.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills into a dated, fingerprinted record per plant; for sites outside India the grid factor is entered from the official source and labelled.
