# How do I count emissions from employees' mileage claims for business trips in their own cars?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/employee-mileage-claims-scope-3

They are Scope 3 Category 6, business travel. Take the kilometres from each claim, split by car or two-wheeler and fuel, and apply a per-km factor or convert to litres with a typical mileage. Commuting to the usual workplace is Category 7, so keep it out.

## What to collect

- Kilometres per claim, already on most reimbursement forms.
- Vehicle type: car, two-wheeler, petrol, diesel or CNG.
- Trip purpose, to separate business travel from commuting.

## Two ways to calculate

Per-km factors from a published table, or kilometres divided by mileage to get litres, then the fuel factor.

## One month of claims

- Petrol cars: 1,200 km at 15 km per litre = 80 L
- 80 L x 2.31 kg = 184.8 kg CO2

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads quantities, dates and units from your bills and invoices and shows the factor and source used on every line.
