# Which scope does rented equipment like a crane or forklift fall in?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/equipment-rental-emissions-which-scope

It depends on who operates it and buys the fuel. If you rent the machine without an operator and fuel it yourself, the fuel is your Scope 1. If the rental company supplies the operator and fuel and bills a service, it is your Scope 3. The contract and invoice show which.

## Examples

- Forklift rented monthly, your diesel: Scope 1.
- Crane hired with operator, all-in rate: Scope 3 Category 1.
- Electric equipment charged on your meter: Scope 2.

## Fuel in the rate

If the rental bill includes fuel, ask for litres used so you can count it accurately.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
