# Does the EU ban on destroying unsold clothes affect Indian garment exporters?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/espr-unsold-clothes-destruction-ban

It binds the companies that discard stock, not you directly. Since 19 July 2026, large companies covered by the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation may not destroy unsold apparel, clothing accessories or footwear, with medium-sized companies expected to follow in 2030. Your EU buyers carry the duty, and may change how they order.

## What the rule says

- Ban on destroying unsold apparel, clothing accessories and footwear: large companies from 19 July 2026.
- Medium-sized companies expected to follow in 2030.
- A delegated regulation sets out when destruction is still allowed, for instance for safety reasons or product damage.
- National authorities oversee compliance.

## Why the EU did it

The Commission estimates that 4 to 9% of unsold textiles in Europe are destroyed before being worn, generating around 5.6 million tons of CO2 a year.

## What EU buyers may ask of you

- Smaller, more frequent orders as brands cut overstock.
- More questions on returns, resale, repair or remanufacture options.
- Requests for product data that helps brands report the unsold goods they discard.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your energy, fuel and freight bills into per-piece and per-order emissions, the figures EU brands ask suppliers for alongside these rules.
