# How much CO2 does electrode paste add per tonne of ferro alloy?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/ferro-alloy-electrode-paste-co2-per-tonne

Multiply paste consumed per tonne of alloy by its carbon content and by 44/12. At 20 kg of paste per tonne and 85% carbon, that is about 62 kg CO2 per tonne. Use your own consumption, because it varies widely with furnace and product.

## The calculation

Paste consumed in the period, from stock records, times its carbon content from the supplier analysis, times 44/12, divided by tonnes of alloy. It sits inside the overall mass balance, so do not add it twice.

## Why consumption varies

Electrode breakage, current density and product grade all change paste use. Track it monthly against output; a jump is often the first sign of an operating problem.

## Where it counts

Paste carbon is a direct emission of the alloy, counted for CBAM where the alloy is covered, such as ferrochrome and ferromanganese, and in every footprint.

## Illustrative paste CO2 for one month

- Paste used: 160 t; alloy made: 8,000 t
- Per tonne: 20 kg x 85% carbon x 44/12 = 62.3 kg CO2

Consumption and carbon content are illustrative; use your stock records and supplier analysis.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for covered goods. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
