# How do I calculate emissions from curing tobacco in flue-cured barns?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/flue-cured-tobacco-barn-fuel-emissions

Weigh the coal or firewood burned per barn season and divide by kilograms of cured leaf. Coal CO2 is fossil and counts fully; firewood CO2 is biogenic and reported separately. Fuel per kilogram varies widely with barn insulation and furnace design.

## Records

- Coal tonnes or firewood kilograms per barn.
- Green leaf loaded and cured leaf out.
- Number of curings in the season.

## Reducing it

Insulated barns and better furnaces cut fuel per kilogram, and the per-kg figure shows the gain.

## One barn season

- Coal 6 t, cured leaf 3,000 kg
- Coal CO2 from tonnes x NCV x the IPCC factor, then divided by 3,000 kg
