# How many years can a Gold Standard project keep earning credits?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/gold-standard-how-many-years-of-credits

Usually ten. Gold Standard certifies in five-year cycles and, unless the activity or product requirements allow more, a project gets one Design Certification Renewal. Each renewal updates the baseline, and every cycle needs at least one performance certification within two years of implementation, design certification or renewal.

## The cycle, step by step

1. List the project through preliminary review.
2. Complete validation within two years of listing, then design review, to reach Certified Design status.
3. Verify at least once in each five-year cycle, the first time within two years of implementation or design certification, whichever is later. Implementation means the activity first operates, such as the start of energy generation.
4. Begin Design Certification Renewal, with an updated baseline, no later than the last date of the cycle.
5. After a renewal, the next performance certification is due within two years.

## Late renewal costs credits

If re-validation runs past the end of the current cycle, issuance in the next cycle is cut by the delay. Gold Standard's own example: a one-year delay means no credits for that year.

## When ten years is not the limit

- Activity or product requirements can allow more renewals, or automatic renewal for some cycles.
- Projects that transitioned from older Gold Standard versions keep their existing crediting cycle and maximum.
- Projects that had to show financial additionality must show ongoing financial need at each renewal.
- Up to two years before Design Certification can be credited retroactively, unless the methodology says otherwise.

## Example: design certified on 1 January 2027

- First performance certification due: by 1 January 2029
- Renewal starts no later than 31 December 2031
- One renewal, so certification ends 31 December 2036: ten years
- At 5,000 t CO2e a year, the ten years cover at most 50,000 t before deductions
- Under VCS Standard v5.0 an energy project could run up to 45 years, so 225,000 t on the same output

Tonnes are an example; baselines updated at renewal can change annual reductions.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps the fuel, power and output records each verification and baseline update draws on, traceable to source documents. It does not act as a VVB, developer or registry.
