# We started our energy project last year. Is it too late to register with Gold Standard?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/gold-standard-one-year-deadline-project-start

Maybe. Gold Standard requires regular and retroactive projects to submit for preliminary review within one year of the project start date, and a retroactive project submitted later is not eligible. The start date is the earliest date you committed to spending on implementation, such as signing the equipment contract, not commissioning.

## Find your real start date first

- It is the earliest date you committed to expenditure on implementing the project, for example signing contracts for equipment or construction.
- Buying land, or an option on land, does not count.
- Small pre-project costs, such as a feasibility study or survey, do not count.
- For distributed technologies, it is the date the first unit was implemented.
- Activity or product requirements can define it differently, so check the ones for your project type.

## Regular or retroactive

If the first round of stakeholder consultation happened before the start date, the project is regular. If it happens after, the project is retroactive. Both face the same one-year limit for the first submission. A retroactive project must also hold at least a physical stakeholder meeting before it submits, and explain why consultation came late.

## What you can still credit

- Retroactive certification of impacts can reach back at most two years before the Design Certification date, unless the methodology or product requirements say otherwise.
- The full stakeholder consultation report, covering both rounds, is due within one year of the start date.
- Land use and forestry projects follow their own activity requirements for this timeline.

## Adding equipment later works the same way

A certified project that adds a new technology or measure must request a design change within one year of that component's start date. Miss it and that component cannot be certified.

## Example: a biomass boiler project

- Boiler supply contract signed: 10 March 2026, which is the start date
- Feasibility study paid in 2025: does not move the start date
- Commissioning: 20 September 2026, which does not reset the clock
- First submission for preliminary review: by 10 March 2027
- Consultation not yet held, so the project is retroactive: physical meeting before that submission

Dates are an example.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps your fuel and electricity invoices dated and fingerprinted from the first bill, which helps show the baseline and the start date to a VVB. It is not a Gold Standard developer or auditor.
