# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a hand pump?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/hand-pump-carbon-footprint-per-pump

Weigh the cast iron head, stand, handle, galvanised riser pipes and rods, and cylinder per pump and multiply by supplier figures. Add machining, assembly and painting energy, then divide the workshop's energy by pumps made.

## Material

- Cast iron or steel head, stand and handle.
- Galvanised steel riser pipes and connecting rods.
- Brass or plastic cylinder parts and seals.

## Process

- Casting or fabrication.
- Machining and assembly.
- Painting and packing.

## Per pump

Report per pump by type and depth, since deeper wells need more riser pipe and rod.

## Worked example: plant energy per pump (one month)

- Electricity: 15,000 kWh x 0.710 = 10,650 kg CO2
- Coal: 3,000 kg x 2.42 = 7,260 kg CO2
- Pumps made: 1,000
- Plant total: 17,910 / 1,000 = 17.9 kg CO2 per pump
- Add iron, pipe and rods for the full figure

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
