# Is a heat pump dryer lower carbon than an LPG dryer?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/heat-pump-dryer-vs-lpg-dryer-emissions

Often, because a heat pump moves heat rather than making it, and it recovers moisture-laden heat that an LPG dryer vents. On the Indian grid the answer depends on how much heat it delivers per kWh. Compare kg CO2 per kg of water removed: LPG at 2.98 kg CO2 per kg, electricity at 0.710 per kWh.

## How to compare

- Measure water removed per batch: weight in minus weight out.
- LPG kg or kWh per batch from invoices or a meter.
- Divide emissions by kg of water removed.

## Things that change the result

- Drying temperature: heat pumps suit low and medium temperatures.
- Rooftop solar powering the heat pump.
- Product quality and drying time.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills and applies IPCC 2006 factors and the CEA grid factor (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh), so you can compare Scope 1 and 2 before and after a change from the documents themselves.
