# Do high carbon and low carbon ferrochrome have different CBAM figures?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/high-carbon-vs-low-carbon-ferrochrome-cbam

Yes. They are declared under different CN codes and made differently. High carbon ferrochrome is reduced with coke in electric furnaces. Low carbon ferrochrome is usually refined with silicon from ferrosilicochrome, so its figure includes that precursor. Report each grade separately.

## CN codes

- 7202 41: ferrochrome containing more than 4 percent carbon by weight.
- 7202 49: other ferrochrome, including low and medium carbon grades.

## Why the figures differ

High carbon ferrochrome's emissions come mainly from coke and electrodes. Low carbon grades use a silicon bearing precursor made in another furnace, whose embedded emissions are added, plus lime and the refining step.

## What buyers should ask

The grade, the CN code and the figure for that grade. A single site average across grades hides the difference and is likely to be challenged.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coal, coke, gas and electricity invoices and production records into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so the direct emissions behind each tonne can be traced to the documents. Emissions factors outside India are entered from the official source and labelled.
