# How do I work out the carbon footprint per tonne of hessian or sacking from a jute mill?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/hooghly-jute-mill-energy-per-tonne

Add the mill's electricity and any boiler fuel over a period, convert them with the right factors, and divide by tonnes of finished goods. Grid power at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh usually dominates, since spinning and weaving are electric. Raw jute farming is a separate, upstream figure.

## Your own share

- Electricity kWh from bills x 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh.
- Coal, wood or oil for boilers used in batching, finishing or the canteen, with their factors.
- Diesel for gensets and forklifts.

## Divide properly

Use tonnes of finished hessian, sacking and yarn sold, and keep yarn sold to others separate. If the mill makes very different products, split by machine hours or weight in each department.

## Upstream

Raw jute growing and retting add farm emissions. Report them separately, labelled as an estimate unless the supplier gives figures.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh from the CEA CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0, plus fuel invoices, so each tonne figure traces back to the bills behind it.
