# How does Senseible convert activity data into emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/how-senseible-calculates-emissions

Quantity times emission factor. Senseible reads the quantity on each line (kWh, litres, kg), classifies it by HSN code to Scope 1, 2 or 3, multiplies it by the published factor for your country, and shows the factor and its source against the line.

If a bill shows an amount but no quantity, Senseible reports a data gap instead of guessing from the amount. Each document is fingerprinted with SHA-256, so the same evidence cannot be counted twice.

For example, 4,200 kWh of grid electricity in India at 0.710 kg CO₂ per kWh is 2,982 kg CO₂.
