# How does TReDS invoice discounting work for an MSME supplier, and what does it cost?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/how-treds-invoice-discounting-works

On TReDS, you upload an invoice, your buyer accepts it online, and banks and NBFCs bid to pay you early at a discount. You get the money without recourse to you, and the buyer pays the financier on the due date. Your cost is the discount plus platform fees.

## Who is involved

- The MSME seller, the only party that can sell invoices on TReDS.
- The buyer: a company, PSU or government department that accepts the invoice and pays on the due date.
- Financiers: banks, NBFC factors and other RBI-permitted institutions that bid.
- The platform: an RBI-authorised TReDS operator such as RXIL, Invoicemart (A.TReDS) or M1xchange.

## The steps

1. Register on a platform with KYC, GST and bank details, and an Udyam registration.
2. Upload the invoice, or the buyer uploads it, as a factoring unit.
3. The buyer accepts it online, confirming the amount and due date.
4. Financiers quote discount rates; you accept the best bid.
5. Funds reach your account, and on the due date the buyer pays the financier through the platform. The financier has no claim back on you if the buyer delays.

## Working out the cost

Discount = invoice amount x annual discount rate x days to due date / 365. Add the platform's fees, which can include a registration fee and a per-transaction fee; read the platform's rulebook or fee schedule. Compare the result with your cash credit interest for the same days.

Your rate depends mostly on the buyer's credit standing, not yours, which is why invoices on strong buyers clear cheaply.

## Which buyers must be on TReDS

A Central Government notification under section 9 of the MSMED Act, 2006 (S.O. 4845(E), 7 November 2024) requires companies with turnover above Rs 250 crore and central public sector enterprises to be on TReDS; it replaced the earlier Rs 500 crore threshold and set 31 March 2025 for onboarding. Ask your buyer which platform it uses.

Under the MSMED Act, a buyer must still pay within the agreed period, capped at 45 days. TReDS helps you get paid early; it does not extend that limit.

## Worked example: one invoice

- Invoice accepted by the buyer: Rs 10,00,000, due in 60 days
- Winning bid: 8 percent a year (illustrative)
- Discount: 10,00,000 x 0.08 x 60 / 365 = Rs 13,151
- You receive about Rs 9,86,849, less the platform's transaction fee

Rates and fees vary by buyer, platform and date; check the bid and fee schedule on the day.

## What Senseible does here

TReDS runs on your invoice and the buyer's acceptance, with no carbon data involved. If you also want a green or energy-efficiency loan, Senseible's green loan readiness check organises the bill-backed evidence a lender reviews.
