# Do hydropower reservoirs emit greenhouse gases?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/hydro-reservoir-methane-emissions

They can: flooded vegetation and soils decompose and release methane, especially in warm, shallow reservoirs. Grid emission factors count only combustion, so reservoir methane is not in the 0.710 figure. Hydro operators can estimate it using IPCC guidance on flooded land.

## For operators

- Methane from reservoirs is reported separately with the method named.
- It varies widely by climate, depth and how much biomass was flooded.
- Non fossil methane has a 100 year warming potential of 27.0 in IPCC AR6.

## For buyers

Your Scope 2 uses the grid or contract factor. Reservoir emissions belong to the generator's inventory, not yours.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
