# Do hydrogen cylinders used in a heat treatment furnace count in Scope 1?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/hydrogen-cylinders-for-heat-treatment-which-scope

Using hydrogen gives no CO2 at your site, so there is nothing for Scope 1 from the hydrogen itself. The emissions are upstream, where it was made, usually from natural gas. Count those in Scope 3 Category 1 using the supplier figure or a factor per kg of hydrogen.

## What to record

- Cylinders or kg of hydrogen bought, from invoices.
- The supplier production route, if they share it.
- Any other gas mixed in, such as nitrogen.

## Where Scope 1 still appears

If the furnace also burns natural gas or LPG for heat, or burns off a carbon-bearing atmosphere, that fuel is Scope 1.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
